I really enjoyed creating these pages, and my inspiration actually derives from the Trance movie poster. It has these lines coming down the pages creating a face with a low opacity behind it, and i really like it. So i thought why not incorporate this within my pages. This also give these pages a kind of identity and create a nice a diverse section from the rest of the magazine. This is what I was after.

Picking a grid that is both flexible and spacious. I knew that i wanted to have a flexible grid that would enable me to fit everything in place and allow me to have the freedom of creativity. I felt that this grid worked well for me. Its simplicity is what makes it work for me i think. Its busy but simple and enabled me to get two coloumns over different sections of the page created a diverse and exciting layout.

IMG_0833 A member of my class brought in a redesigned issue of a crisp computer arts magazine, this really inspired me in regards to my front cover, i copied the idea of how it advertises what is inside, with really nice little underlined text neatly tucked away, and it really suited what i was after.

IMG_0834This project has really brought me out of my comfort zone so, i needed to look at a wide range of sources to assist my design, and i feel that this is what is going to help create something i am proud of. I have kind of drawn some inspiration from ‘Little white Lies’ in regards to there ‘arty’ and unique style. I have been to the library numerous times and and have taken lots of knowledge out of different books. One that has really stood out for me is the book in Typography, it has shown me what can be done with type, and has improved my skills. Typography is something i find really rewarding and would love to be an expert at it.

Total Film has a huge following and is one of the biggest blockbuster film magazines in the market. It features news from the film industry,  articles on new releases from
well-respected film reviewers and film industry professionals (some of which are famous actors and journalists).

It is fully engaging and gives a sense of ‘action’ in every magazine.  In its pursuit of action it lacks its own identity it takes on the style of the movie it is featuring.  Each Magazine has an up and coming film to feature it, and this feature is what sells the magazine.

This is where I feel it should separate itself to its competitors, film magazines all appear the same on the shelves, same style, same layout. I believe what is essential for Total Film is a rebranding. It needs to advertise itself more than the films it is reviewing, it is a well
established magazine with a lot of interesting columns. It needs to appear to be the
reliable source that it is.

My aim is to rebrand Total Film in a way that will allow it to establish itself more than the films it is selling. I want its readers to see the magazine as a reliable source, and not feel embarrassed to be reading it in public.  The aim is to change peoples perceptions towards the magazine. The most important selling point should be its quality of content. By making the magazine more sleek and clean I feel it can change people misconceptions about the magazine, and will allow for branching off to an audience with a better disposable income. Obviously I do not want to alienate its current audience, and this is the line that I will be very aware of.  I feel the design is what makes the magazine, and with a needed change I feel this magazine can be something special.

I want it to:

– Distinguish itself from other film magazines
– Create a strong and clear brand identity
– Appear to be different and more individual to other film magazines
– Appeal to a more artistic & proffessional audience, whilst keeping its roots.

I will achieve this through:

– A simple colour palette.
– Consider paper quality.
– Increase negative space around the images and the text throughout.
– Huge images to create a cinematic and
spacious effect.
– A more minimal and stylistic approach
